What's happening?

Construction is under way on the Wayne County jail complex, which will house Wayne County Circuit Court and the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, both currently located at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice downtown. It will also have an adult jail and a juvenile detention facility with more than 2,000 beds, as well as administration and utilities buildings. The planned $533 million project was about $40 million over budget as of 2020, and the center is expected to be complete in late 2022. Bedrock is managing development of the site for Wayne County after a land swap deal that gave Bedrock ownership of the failed jail site on Gratiot downtown. A 2018 agreement calls for the county to cover $380 million of the costs; the rest is funded by Bedrock.
