Developer Neal Check of RainCheck Development LLC in Birmingham purchased the former New Grace Baptist Church in 2021 from Midtown Detroit Inc. for $900,000, with plans to convert it into 15 lofts shared in February 2022. The vacant Midtown church was built in 1915 and was last occupied in 2007. The project is estimated to cost $3 million; Check intends to seek tax incentives and charge below-market rents for a few of the units.
